8 May 2020 – Lockdown Day 57

Wednesday 6 May
Lots of confusion today about whether the lockdown extension would be approved or not.   It was finally passed and we will move to the next stage on Monday.   Not at all sure what that will include, and probably won’t find out until Sunday night.

It is expected to include groups of up to ten allowed to meet.  However under other restrictions they would all have to come from Parcent and would have to restrict any walk organised to within 1km of their home.

But even more important I do wonder how confident people will be to meet in groups after seven weeks locked up at home.

I hope that I am wrong, but I fear it may be a long time before we can hope to get out in the hills with our walking friends again.

Thursday 7 May
A little cooler today, much more pleasant for our daily walk.

I have a programme of proposed walks for our two walking groups for the whole year.   Each Monday and Thursday I often glance at it to see which walk we should be doing.   Today was walking from Parcent to Orba Castle.   This is a lovely walk at this time of year, lots of butterflies on the summit.  And this would have been a particularly lovely day to do it.

Today’s walk covers the first part of the Orba Castle walk.   At one T junction we normally turn left towards Murla, but today it was right towards the house.  There is a nice view of the castle at this point, and we it made us realise how much we are missing.   It is not just the physical enjoyment of long walks in pleasant surroundings, but even more important sharing the experience with our walking friends.

Hopefully it will not be long before we can do so again.

Friday 8 May
At last confirmation that the lockdown restrictions will be reduced on Monday, when Phase 1 is introduced.  There are some headline bullet points, such as two can be in the same car.   Some bars will open, with 50% of previous maximum customers.   Up to ten people can meet.

However there are more questions than answers.   We are still restricted to walking more than 1 km from the house.   We can only drive to the nearest shop for essential shopping.   I am sure that these, and many more, questions will be answered in due course.  But it is disappointing, and frustrating, that the local town hall makes no effort to explain the implications of the change to local residents.   Presumably they don’t know the answers either.

Being able to use the car together is the biggest improvement.  But it would be nice to know where can we drive and what for.

Any relaxing of the restrictions is welcome.   Just hope that it does not result in a second wave of infections.
